The Unfinished Obelisk is the largest known ancient obelisk located in the northern region of the stone quarries of ancient Egypt in Aswan. It is over 3,500 years old and was discovered in the granite quarries of Aswan where it was abandoned due to the presence of cracks. The creation of the obelisk was possibly commissioned by Hatshepsut, the 18th Dynasty Pharaoh who ruled Egypt around 1450 BC.
The obelisk measures about 42 meters in length and is estimated to weigh over 1,168 tonnes, making it one of the heaviest structures in ancient Egypt. If it had been completed, it would have been the greatest ever erected. The obelisk is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, alongside other examples of Upper Egyptian architecture, as part of the “Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae,” even though the quarry site is not exactly Nubian, nor is it situated between Abu Simbel and Philae.
