Pickup and Transfer

Your day begins with a prompt pickup from your centrally located Cairo or Giza hotel. You will meet your private guide and board a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. During the short drive to the historic district, your guide will provide a brief overview of Islamic Cairo and the fascinating eras of the Mamluks and the Muhammad Ali dynasty.

Stop 1: The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan

Arriving at Salah al-Din Square, you will first enter the 14th-century Mosque of Sultan Hassan. Known for its massive stone facade and deeply recessed entrance portal, the mosque immediately commands respect.

• The Entrance and Corridor: Walk through the monumental portal, decorated with exquisite stone carvings, and navigate the dark, angled corridor designed to quiet the mind before entering the sacred space.
• The Central Courtyard (Sahn): Emerge into the breathtaking central courtyard. Your guide will detail the significance of the central ablution fountain and point out the four massive vaulted halls (iwans) that once hosted scholars of the four Sunni schools of Islamic law.

Stop 2: The Al-Rifa’i Mosque

Directly across the pedestrian walkway, you will transition into the modern era at the Al-Rifa’i Mosque. Commissioned by Khushyar Hanim, the mother of Khedive Ismail, this mosque was built to mirror the grandeur of Sultan Hassan.

• Architectural Comparison: Your guide will highlight how the 19th-century architects used modern techniques to replicate and expand upon traditional Mamluk designs, including soaring ceilings and elaborate stained glass.
• The Royal Tombs: Navigate the quiet, beautifully ornamented side chambers. You will view the final resting places of King Fuad, King Farouk (the last reigning king of Egypt), and the vividly decorated tomb of the Shah of Iran.

Return Journey
