Morning: The High Citadel and Abbasid Roots

First, your private expedition begins at the Citadel of Saladin. Perched on the Muqattam Hills, you will explore the Ottoman-style Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the Ayyubid military walls. Following this, we descend to the Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Tulun. Your guide will explain the Abbasid architectural style and the significance of the mosque’s “Samarra-style” spiral minaret. Next, we visit the nearby Gayer-Anderson Museum (architecture) and the stunning Bab Zuweila Gate, where you will see the ancient walls that once protected the Fatimid caliphs.

Mid-Day: The Spiritual Heart and Scholar’s Row

Afterward, we move into the 10th-century core of Al-Qahira. You will enter the Al-Azhar Mosque, exploring its forest of pillars and learning about its 1,000-year history as a center of global learning. As a result of the morning’s walk, we pause for a gourmet lunch at a historic restaurant near El-Muizz Street, sampling traditional Egyptian Fatta and grilled meats. Following lunch, we visit the Al-Mu’ayyad Shaykh Mosque, built into the wall of Bab Zuweila, famous for its “hanging” architecture and breathtaking bronze-plated doors.

Afternoon: The Golden Street and the Grand Bazaar

Next, the journey continues down Sharie Al-Muizz (El-Muizz Street). This is the heart of the “Outdoor Museum.” You will enter Bait Al-Suhaimi, a 17th-century private home, to see how medieval Egyptians used “Mashrabiya” screens and interior fountains for natural cooling. Then, we pass through the Qalawun Complex and the Barquq Madrasa before finally immersing ourselves in the legendary Khan El-Khalili Bazaar. Finally, after a visit to the historic artisan workshops of the spice and copper markets, your private driver will escort you back to your hotel as the evening call to prayer echoes across the city.
