These are not the tombs of pharaohs, but of the powerful governors, explorers, and princes of ancient Aswan. They were the “Keepers of the Southern Frontier,” and their tombs are carved directly into the high cliffs, eternally watching over the Nile.

What Are the Tombs of the Nobles?

Who: The governors, princes, and explorers of Elephantine Island (ancient Aswan).
When: The tombs date from the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms (over 4,000 years ago).

1. The Felucca or Motorboat Trip

Your adventure begins on the water. You must take a boat from the East Bank to the West Bank. We highly recommend a traditional felucca sail, letting the wind guide you across the Nile. As you approach the West Bank, you’ll see your destination: a series of dark openings in the cliff face, with a steep staircase rising from the sand.

2. The Climb

The Tomb of Harkhuf (6th Dynasty): This is the tomb of a true explorer. Harkhuf was a governor who led four dangerous expeditions deep into Africa (ancient Nubia). His tomb wall famously includes a copy of a letter from the boy-king Pepi II, who eagerly awaited Harkhuf’s return, especially because he was bringing back a “dancing dwarf” (a pygmy) for the royal court!
The Tombs of Mekhu & Sabni (6th Dynasty): A touching story of father and son. When Mekhu (the father) was killed on an expedition, his son Sabni led a dangerous rescue mission to retrieve his body and give him a proper burial.
The Tomb of Sarenput II (12th Dynasty): This is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved tombs. Sarenput II was a powerful governor during the Middle Kingdom. His tomb is famous for its bright, detailed paintings and a stunning, hidden chamber with a beautiful “false door” for the ka (spirit).
