The Global Code of Ethics for Tourism

The Global Code of Ethics for Tourism (GCET) is a set of principles that promotes responsible and sustainable tourism. It helps governments, the travel industry, communities, and tourists maximize the benefits of tourism while minimizing its negative impacts. These impacts can affect the environment, cultural heritage, and societies worldwide.

The World Tourism Organization’s General Assembly adopted the code in 1999. The United Nations recognized it two years later, prompting the UNWTO to implement its provisions. While the code is not legally binding, it includes a voluntary implementation mechanism. The World Committee on Tourism Ethics (WCTE) helps stakeholders with questions about the code’s application.
