  • Ancient Nubian Home: The Nubians, Aswan’s original inhabitants, were the first to settle here, taking advantage of the fertile land. They called the island Jet Nart.
  • A General’s Passion Project: In 1899, the island was given to Lord Horatio Kitchener for his service as the commander of the Egyptian Army. It became known as “The Lord’s House.” Kitchener was a passionate gardener and, using his military connections, he began importing plants and palm trees from across the British Empire, transforming the entire island into his private, unfamiliar paradise.
  • A Botanical World Tour: After Kitchener’s time, the island became the property of the Egyptian government. In 1928, the Ministry of Irrigation took over and began a scientific project, importing new, rare plants from all five continents.

1. How to Get There

You have three main options:

  • The Public Ferry: This is the local, budget-friendly option. A public ferry runs between the Aswan Corniche, Elephantine Island, and Kitchener’s Island.
  • A Private Motorboat: You can hire a motorboat from any dock along the Corniche for a fast, direct trip.
  • A Traditional Felucca (The Best Way): This is the most magical way to visit. We highly recommend hiring a felucca, especially in the late afternoon. Let the wind sail you gently to the island’s dock. It turns the simple act of “getting there” into an unforgettable experience.

2. A Pro-Tip for Your Visit

The island has three entrances. The main entrance is at the northern tip.

  • Our Expert Tip: We recommend entering at the main gate on the northern end. Take your time and walk the entire beautiful length of the island.
  • The Easy Way Out: Before you go, ask your felucca captain to drop you at the north dock and meet you at the southern dock. This way, you get to see the whole island from end to end without having to backtrack.
