More than 120,000 artifacts from ancient Egypt as well as King Tut’s gold hoard are kept in the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. The downtown area is home to stores that offer clothing, leather bags, and shoes, as well as Midan El-Tahrir, Sharia Qasr El-nil, Sharia Talaat Harb, and Egyptian movie theatres. Cairo’s central business district and the surrounding region are also referred to as Cairo the 2nd since they were constructed after Cairo “Al-Qahira” and almost replaced it in 1869 when Khedive Ismail opened the Suez Canal.
