About the Giza Pyramids
The Giza Pyramids are one of the most iconic landmarks in Egypt and the world, situated near the city of Giza, southwest of Cairo. The complex is comprised of three pyramids, namely the Great Pyramid, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated complexes. They were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt, between 2600 and 2500 BC.
The Great Pyramid, which is also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or Cheops, is the largest pyramid in Giza and the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world that is still standing today. The Great Pyramid was built in approximately 2570 BC and stands at an impressive height of 147 meters. It is constructed of about 2.3 million limestone blocks, each weighing around 2.5 tons, and it is estimated that it took around 20 years and 100,000 workers to complete its construction.
The Pyramid of Khafre, located a few hundred meters southwest of the Great Pyramid, is the second-largest pyramid in Giza. It was built by the Pharaoh Khafre and stands at a height of 136 meters. The Pyramid of Khafre is slightly smaller than the Great Pyramid but appears taller due to its elevation.
The Pyramid of Menkaure, located minor distance south of the other two pyramids, was constructed by Pharaoh Menkaure and is the smallest of the three pyramids. It stands at a height of 62 meters, and its construction was completed around 2510 BC.
The Giza Pyramid complex is also home to the Great Sphinx, a massive statue with the head of a human and the body of a lion. The Sphinx stands at a height of 20 meters and is situated on the west bank of the Nile river. Its purpose remains a mystery.
Visitors can explore the Giza Pyramid complex on foot and enter some of the pyramids, except for the Great Pyramid, which is closed for interior exploration. Moreover, there is a sound and light show that takes place in the evenings to provide an educational and entertaining experience for visitors.
Overall, the Giza Pyramids are a testament to the grandeur and architectural prowess of ancient Egypt and are a must-see destination for anyone interested in history, tradition, and culture.
