About Kom Ombo and Edfu Temples

Edfu and Kom Ombo temples are two of the most popular temples in Egypt. The Ptolemaic dynasty built the Edfu Temple between 237 and 57 BC in the city of Edfu, located between Luxor and Aswan, and dedicated it to the falcon-headed god Horus. Many consider this temple one of the best-preserved cult temples in Egypt, with the Romans later adding some final touches.

The Kom Ombo Temple is located in the town of Kom Ombo, which is about 50 km from Aswan, and is one of the most unusual temples in Egypt. The builders designed Kom Ombo as a double temple, dedicating it to two gods—Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon god. Constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty, the temple is known for its unique ‘double’ design, with duplicated courts, halls, sanctuaries, and rooms for each set of gods.

The decorations and reliefs in both temples refer to cultic liturgies that were conducted during that time period. Both temples are examples of Ancient Egypt’s stunning architecture and artwork, featuring impressive columns, detailed hieroglyphics, beautifully painted scenes, and elaborate carvings found throughout the temples.

Edfu Temple honors only Horus. While Kom Ombo Temple is famous for its displays of crocodile worship, featuring many crocodile mummies. The temple also has a museum, The Crocodile Museum, which houses a collection of mummified crocodiles.

Visiting these temples is considered an essential part of any trip to Egypt. Many visitors opt for guided tours to learn more about the details of the temple’s fascinating history. Architecture, and religious significance. Both temples preserve an impressive standard and offer tourists.  A unique insight into the religious and cultural practices once prevalent in Ancient Egypt.

We arrived at the port gates with only 10 minutes to spare. But the guards ignored our U.S. passports, and they refused to
