About Kom Ombo and Edfu Temples
Edfu and Kom Ombo temples are two of the most popular temples in Egypt. The Edfu Temple is located in the city of Edfu, which is situated between Luxor and Aswan, and is dedicated to the falcon-headed god, Horus. The temple is considered one of the best-preserved cult temples in Egypt. It was built between 237 and 57 BC by the Ptolemaic dynasty, and the Romans added some final touches later.
The Kom Ombo Temple is located in the town of Kom Ombo, which is about 50 km from Aswan, and is one of the most unusual temples in Egypt. It is a double temple, meaning that it is dedicated to two gods – Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon god. The temple was also built during the Ptolemaic dynasty and is noted for its unique ‘double’ design, which means that it has two of everything – courts, halls, sanctuaries, and rooms, duplicated for the two sets of gods.
The decorations and reliefs in both temples refer to cultic liturgies that were conducted during that time period. Both temples are examples of Ancient Egypt’s stunning architecture and artwork, featuring impressive columns, detailed hieroglyphics, beautifully painted scenes, and elaborate carvings found throughout the temples.
While Edfu Temple is dedicated solely to Horus, the Kom Ombo Temple is more famous for its displays of crocodile worship, with many crocodile mummies on display. The temple also has a museum, The Crocodile Museum, which houses a collection of mummified crocodiles.
Visiting these temples is considered an essential part of any trip to Egypt. Many visitors opt for guided tours to learn more about the details of the temple’s fascinating history, architecture, and religious significance. Both temples have been preserved to an impressive standard and offer tourists a unique insight into the religious and cultural practices that were once prevalent in Ancient Egypt.
