A Fortress of Faith: Emperor Justinian I built the main monastery complex between 527 and 565 AD. He constructed it as a massive, fortified compound to protect the monks and the sacred site identified by St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, almost 200 years earlier.

The Burning Bush: The monastery stands around its holiest site: the Chapel of the Burning Bush. This chapel rests directly over the roots of the very plant that, according to the Old Testament, God used to speak to Moses—a bush that burned, but the fire did not consume.

A Symbol of Coexistence: In a remarkable display of interfaith history, builders constructed a Fatimid-era mosque within the monastery walls in the 10th century. It stands peacefully next to the church, a testament to centuries of mutual respect.
