Medieval Cairo Walking Tour Itinerary

Step 1: The Northern Fortress Gates

Your private guide picks you up from your hotel and takes you to the monumental northern walls of the ancient city. You begin your expedition at Bab al-Futuh (Gate of Conquest) and Bab al-Nasr (Gate of Victory). Inspect the massive defensive architecture and historical inscriptions that protected the royal city from invaders.

Step 2: The Heart of El-Moez Street

Pass through the gates and step directly onto Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah al-Fatimi Street. You walk the primary artery of Medieval Cairo. Your guide decodes the history carved into the walls of the Al-Hakim Mosque and reveals the architectural breakthroughs of the Al-Aqmar Mosque, one of the first buildings in Cairo to align its majestic façade with the street rather than the Qibla.

Step 3: The Qalawun Complex & Barquq Mosque

Command the center of the city as you enter the Qalawun Complex. You explore the breathtaking hospital, madrasa, and mausoleum that form this Mamluk masterpiece. Stand beneath the towering, intricately carved ceilings and witness the sheer wealth and artistic power of medieval Egypt.

Step 4: The Southern Gate & The Tentmakers

Continue southward, passing ancient sabils (water dispensaries) and historic mansions, until you reach Bab Zuweila. Ascend this southern gate for a dominant, panoramic view over Cairo. Upon descending, you walk through the Street of the Tentmakers (Sharia al-Khayamiya), witnessing local artisans craft vibrant, authentic textiles exactly as their ancestors did centuries ago.
