About Saladin Citadel

The Saladin Citadel, also known as the Citadel of Cairo, is a medieval fortress located in the city of Cairo, Egypt.

  1. Saladin, a Kurdish ruler in the 12th century, built it to protect Cairo from potential Crusader attacks and to provide a secure center of government for his new regime. The location, situated on a promontory beneath the Muqattam Hills, made it difficult to attack.
  2. Saladin’s successors expanded and developed the Citadel during the Mamluk period, culminating in the construction projects of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad in the 14th century.

In the first half of the 19th century, Muhammad Ali Pasha demolished many of the older buildings and built new palaces and monuments all across the site, giving it much of its present form.

The Citadel underwent major development during the Mamluk Sultanate period that followed and became the seat of government in Egypt and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years from the 13th to the 19th centuries. The site also includes mosques and museums and is now a preserved historic site.

About Coptic Cairo

Coptic Cairo, a historic neighborhood in Old Cairo, is known for its Coptic Christian churches and sites. According to tradition, the Holy Family visited and stayed at Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church.

The Persians built a fort here in the 6th century BC, leading to Christian establishment during and after the Islamic conquest in the 7th century. Key churches include the Hanging Church and the Church of the Holy Virgin. Today, it remains predominantly Christian and features the Coptic Museum and the ancient Babylon Fortress.

Coptic Cairo offers visitors a chance to explore its maze-like streets filled with historical buildings and religious sites. Key activities include visiting churches, the museum, and the ancient fortress, and experiencing local culture, all showcasing Egypt’s early Christian heritage.
