This is a must-see! A Nilometer was an ancient “database”—a structure that priests used to measure the Nile’s water level.

  • Why? By measuring the flood, they could predict the success of the harvest and calculate the taxes for the entire kingdom.
  • What You’ll See: You can walk down a stone staircase that descends right to the river. Look for the ancient markings on the wall in Roman numerals, which they used to record the water levels.
