Touring Egypt in January FAQs

1. What is the weather really like in January?

January has some of the best weather of the year in Egypt. It is a mild, sunny winter.

  • In Cairo & Alexandria: Days are cool and crisp, with average highs around 19°C (66°F). Nights get cold, dropping to 9°C (48°F). Rain is possible, especially in Alexandria.
  • In Luxor & Aswan: You’ll find perfect, sunny sightseeing weather with highs around 23°C (74°F). Nights are still cool, so you’ll need a jacket.
  • In Hurghada (Red Sea): It’s a popular “winter sun” destination. Days are pleasantly warm, perfect for the beach, though the sea can be a bit brisk for some (many hotel pools are heated).

2. Since January is “peak season,” is it too crowded and expensive?

It is the busiest and most popular time to visit, which means attractions will be more crowded and prices for flights and hotels will be at their highest. This is especially true during the first week, which includes New Year’s and Coptic Christmas (Jan 7).

The trade-off is that you are experiencing Egypt in its most comfortable climate.

3. How far in advance do I really need to book for January?

As early as possible. January is the high season. To secure your preferred hotels, Nile cruise, and the best guides, you should plan on booking at least 3 to 6 months in advance, especially if your dates are in the first half of the month.

4. What should I pack for Egypt in January?

Layers are essential. You will likely be in a t-shirt during the day in Luxor but will need a medium-weight jacket or fleece at night.

  • Daytime: T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, and light pants.
  • Evening/Night: A warm jacket, fleece, sweaters, and socks. It gets surprisingly cold once the sun sets.
  • Essentials: Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen (the sun is still strong), a hat, and sunglasses.

5. Will tourist sites be closed for New Year’s or Coptic Christmas?

No. All major historical sites, temples, and museums remain fully open for tourists. Coptic Christmas (January 7th) is an important national holiday, and while some local businesses may close, it will not disrupt your tour. You will simply get to enjoy a wonderfully festive atmosphere.

6. Is a Nile cruise a good idea in January?

It is the perfect time for a Nile cruise. The mild, sunny weather is ideal for relaxing on the sundeck as you sail. Most importantly, it’s not too hot to explore the open-air temples of Kom Ombo, Edfu, and Luxor, which can be unbearable in the summer.

7. Can I still swim at the Red Sea resorts?

Yes. While locals find it too cold, most international visitors find the Red Sea in Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh pleasant. The air temperature is like a beautiful spring day. The sea itself is refreshing (around 22°C / 72°F), and many resort pools are heated. It’s an excellent time for diving and snorkeling.
