Locals in Fayoum often say you haven’t truly seen their region until you’ve visited “Berka”—an affectionate Arabic word for “little lake.” This is a charming understatement. The body of water they refer to is Lake Qarun, a vast, historic lake that is Egypt’s third-largest. Located 80 kilometers southwest of Cairo, this is not just a body of water; it’s a 45-meter-deep depression below sea level that has been a lifeline and a mirror to human civilization for over 8,000 years. It is a land of stunning scenery, profound legends, and a complex history that shaped the entire Fayoum oasis.

Ancient Wonder: This is the remnant of the legendary, freshwater “Lake Moeris,” a massive reservoir engineered by 12th Dynasty pharaohs to control the Nile’s floods.
Unique Geography: It is Egypt’s third-largest lake, a “closed” saline lake (as salty as the sea) with no outlet, sitting 45 meters (148 ft) below sea level.
Global Importance: It is a protected Ramsar Site, a wetland of international importance, especially as a crucial resting spot for migratory birds.

The Mystery of the Name: The Legend of Qarun

The name “Qarun” is steeped in legend, with a few competing theories.

Theory 1: The Roman City: Some believe the name is a corruption of Karanis, a major Greco-Roman city whose ruins lie to the east. This is unlikely, as locals called it “Birka El Seid” (Lake of Fishing) long after Karanis was abandoned.
Theory 2: The Horn: A 19th-century traveler claimed the name came from Qarn (Arabic for “horn”), after a horn-shaped peak on an island. No other traveler supported this.
Theory 3: The Man Swallowed by the Earth: The most famous legend connects the lake to a figure mentioned in both the Bible and the Quran.

The Legend of Qarun

In the Bible (Numbers 16), He is Korah, a man who rebels against Moses and is swallowed by the earth as divine punishment.
In the Quran (al-Qasas 76), He is Qarun, a man of fabulous wealth who becomes arrogant and is consumed by his greed.

Egyptian legend builds on this, claiming Qarun had a “Midas touch” and could turn anything to gold. His fortune is said to be buried beneath the lake, and the nearby temple (Qasr Qarun) is often misidentified as his palace.

A 1714 account from a French traveler adds another layer. His Bedouin guides told him of a wicked ruler named Caron who used magic to flood his own prosperous land, turning it into a sterile desert. This story likely reflects the real-world desertification that happened in the late Roman era, with “Qarun” becoming a mythical figure representing a destructive Roman governor.

From Freshwater Sea to Salty Lake: A 70,000-Year History

The lake you see today is a small, salty fraction of its former self. Its history is the key to understanding the Fayoum.

The Birth of “Lake Moeris”

Geological evidence shows wind erosion first formed the Fayoum depression. About 70,000 years ago, Nile floodwaters broke through a channel (the Bahr Yousef) and filled the basin, creating a massive freshwater lake.

The Pharaohs’ Great Reservoir (The Middle Kingdom)

The lake’s most important era came during the 12th Dynasty (c. 1991–1802 BCE). Pharaohs like Amenemhat I saw the lake’s potential. They expanded and deepened the Bahr Yousef canal, reconnecting the lake to the Nile and building embankments to regulate the flow.

This project was one of ancient Egypt’s greatest engineering feats. It transformed Lake Moeris into a giant reservoir.

During the high Nile flood, it absorbed excess water, protecting Lower Egypt from catastrophic floods.
During the dry season, it released the stored water back into the Nile Valley for irrigation.

The Ptolemaic Land Boom

In the early Ptolemaic period (c. 3rd century BCE), Ptolemy II began a new, massive land reclamation project. By controlling the water flow, his engineers permanently lowered the lake’s level. This reclaimed over 1,200 square kilometers of incredibly fertile land, creating an agricultural boom and leading to the founding of new cities like Karanis and Dionysias.

The Lake’s Decline

In late Roman times, neglect and heavy silting choked the canals, including the Bahr Yousef. With its freshwater source cut off and no outlet, evaporation took over. The lake began to shrink and, for the first time, became salty.

By the 14th century, its water was unusable for irrigation. By the 19th century, its level had dropped to 40 meters below sea level.

Lake Qarun Today: A Modern National Park

Today, authorities carefully manage the lake’s level at 45 meters below sea level. It is a “closed” lake, meaning it’s a final destination for water.

A Lake of Numbers (Modern Geography)

Size: 42 km long and up to 9 km wide.
Area: 214 square kilometers.
Depth: Averages 4-5 meters, with a maximum depth of just over 8 meters.
Water Source: It receives about 370 million cubic meters of agricultural drainage water annually.
Salinity: High evaporation has concentrated its salts to 34.5 parts per thousand, making it just as salty as seawater.

Life in the Salty Water

The rising salinity in the 20th century killed off the lake’s original freshwater fish. However, people have since stocked the lake with saltwater species. Today, it supports a significant fishing industry for:

A Vital Wetland for Birds
