Luxor Day Trip: Explore Ancient Wonders
Your day begins with a morning pickup from your Hurghada hotel. You’ll travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle to Luxor, where you’ll thoroughly explore some of Egypt’s most iconic sites.
Discover the Valley of the Kings
Step into the Valley of the Kings, a majestic gateway to the afterlife for Egypt’s New Kingdom rulers (1570-1070 BC). This valley houses 63 tombs, revealing incredible jewels, artifacts, sculptures, and stunning décor, along with the remains of pharaohs like Ramses II, Amenhotep I, Hatshepsut, and Tutankhamun. UNESCO recognized the Valley of the Kings as a World Heritage site in 1979.
Admire the Temple of Hatshepsut
Next, explore the Temple of Hatshepsut, also known as Djeser-Djeseru, or “Holy of Holies.” This stunning temple symbolizes the idealism, allure, and power of Queen Hatshepsut, one of ancient Egypt’s most successful rulers, who reigned from 1479 BC. The temple honors the creator deity Amun and commemorates Hatshepsut’s remarkable legacy. Its design is mesmerizingly beautiful, embodying the Classical Architecture style of the New Kingdom.
Witness the Colossi of Memnon
Stand before the Colossi of Memnon, two colossal statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III (1386-1350 BC). These massive quartzite sandstone slabs, standing 18 meters (60 feet) tall and weighing 720 tonnes each, journeyed a long distance from Cairo to Luxor to guard this ancient city. An earthquake in 27 BC toppled the colossi, but reconstruction in 199 AD led to their fame during the Greco-Roman era due to the “Vocal Memnon” phenomenon.
Enjoy a delicious lunch to recharge before continuing your exploration.
Experience the Grandeur of Karnak Temple
Proceed to the Karnak Temple, known as Ipet-isu, meaning “The Most Selected of Places,” and Pr-Imn, “House of Amun.” Built about 4000 years ago, Karnak has stood for over 1500 years as one of the largest sacred structures on the planet. It served as a worship center for many deities, including Osiris, Ptah, and Isis, but primarily honored the Theban triad of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu.
Finally, your Luxor day excursion from Hurghada concludes. A private, air-conditioned vehicle will comfortably transport you back to your Hurghada hotel.
