The Al-Azhar Mosque was founded in 970 CE by Jawhar al-Siqilli, the Fatimid commander who conquered Egypt and established Cairo. It served as the central mosque for the new capital. Initially, its purpose was to spread Shi’a teachings. For tourists, a visit to Al-Azhar Mosque is an essential part of any Cairo itinerary. It’s best to visit outside of prayer times to fully appreciate the architecture and atmosphere. Remember to dress modestly, and women will be asked to cover their hair. The mosque’s location in the heart of Islamic Cairo makes it an easy stop when exploring the nearby Khan el-Khalili market.
