  • Theory 2: The Horn: A 19th-century traveler claimed the name came from Qarn (Arabic for “horn”), after a horn-shaped peak on an island. No other traveler supported this.
  • Theory 3: The Man Swallowed by the Earth: The most famous legend connects the lake to a figure mentioned in both the Bible and the Quran.

The Legend of Qarun

  • In the Bible (Numbers 16): He is Korah, a man who rebels against Moses and is swallowed by the earth as divine punishment.
  • In the Quran (al-Qasas 76): He is Qarun, a man of fabulous wealth who becomes arrogant and is consumed by his greed.

Egyptian legend builds on this, claiming Qarun had a “Midas touch” and could turn anything to gold. His fortune is said to be buried beneath the lake, and the nearby temple (Qasr Qarun) is often misidentified as his palace.

A 1714 account from a French traveler adds another layer. His Bedouin guides told him of a wicked ruler named Caron who used magic to flood his own prosperous land, turning it into a sterile desert. This story likely reflects the real-world desertification that happened in the late Roman era, with “Qarun” becoming a mythical figure representing a destructive Roman governor.

The Birth of “Lake Moeris”

Geological evidence shows wind erosion first formed the Fayoum depression. About 70,000 years ago, Nile floodwaters broke through a channel (the Bahr Yousef) and filled the basin, creating a massive freshwater lake.

The Pharaohs’ Great Reservoir (The Middle Kingdom)

The lake’s most important era came during the 12th Dynasty (c. 1991–1802 BCE). Pharaohs like Amenemhat I saw the lake’s potential. They expanded and deepened the Bahr Yousef canal, reconnecting the lake to the Nile and building embankments to regulate the flow.

This project was one of ancient Egypt’s greatest engineering feats. It transformed Lake Moeris into a giant reservoir.

  • During the high Nile flood, it absorbed excess water, protecting Lower Egypt from catastrophic floods.
  • During the dry season, it released the stored water back into the Nile Valley for irrigation.

The Ptolemaic Land Boom

In the early Ptolemaic period (c. 3rd century BCE), Ptolemy II began a new, massive land reclamation project. By controlling the water flow, his engineers permanently lowered the lake’s level. This reclaimed over 1,200 square kilometers of incredibly fertile land, creating an agricultural boom and leading to the founding of new cities like Karanis and Dionysias.

The Lake’s Decline

In late Roman times, neglect and heavy silting choked the canals, including the Bahr Yousef. With its freshwater source cut off and no outlet, evaporation took over. The lake began to shrink and, for the first time, became salty.

By the 14th century, its water was unusable for irrigation. By the 19th century, its level had dropped to 40 meters below sea level.
