Ancient Egyptian Attractions

The gateway to ancient wonders

Guide to Ancient Egyptian Attractions

Egypt is a land filled with countless Ancient Egyptian attractions. The cities of Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and Aswan are home to many of these magnificent sites. These attractions offer a vivid glimpse into the country’s rich history, enduring culture, and stunning beauty.

The ancient Egyptian civilization thrived for over 5,000 years, creating monumental landmarks that have truly withstood the test of time. Because of this long and rich history, archaeologists continue to make discoveries every day. Each new excavation uncovers breathtaking artifacts, which in turn adds to the ever-growing list of Ancient Egyptian attractions for visitors to explore and marvel at.

The Great Pyramids and Sphinx

Pyramids Sphinx

Located just outside Cairo, these pyramids are the only remaining ancient wonders of the world. The Great Pyramid, built for Pharaoh Khufu, is the largest of the three. It was the tallest man-made structure for over 3,800 years. The Great Sphinx, with the body of a lion and the head of a man, guards the Giza plateau. These are some of the most iconic Ancient Egyptian attractions in the world.

Thebes: The City of a Hundred Gates

Travel south to Luxor, once the ancient city of Thebes. People often call this area the “world’s greatest open-air museum” because it has so many Ancient Egyptian attractions. The Karnak Temple complex is a sprawling religious site that people dedicated to the god Amun. It is one of the largest religious buildings ever constructed. You can wander through its massive columns and impressive halls. Then, visit the nearby Luxor Temple. It is especially beautiful at night.

Across the Nile, the Valley of the Kings serves as the final resting place for many New Kingdom pharaohs. Here, you can descend into rock-cut tombs adorned with intricate hieroglyphics and paintings. These works of art depict the pharaoh’s journey into the afterlife. The tomb of King Tutankhamun was the most famous discovery here.

Aswan: Gateway to the South

Further south, you will find Aswan, a city known for its serene beauty. This area offers unique Ancient Egyptian attractions. The Philae Temple, which people dedicated to the goddess Isis, sits on an island in the Nile. The temple was moved to its current location to save it from flooding after engineers built the Aswan High Dam. The High Dam is a modern engineering marvel and a symbol of Egypt’s progress. You can also take a felucca, a traditional sailboat, to explore the Nile’s peaceful waters.
