Hieroglyphic Writing in Ancient Egypt
We will teach you the ancient Egyptian alphabet and how to write your name with its unique and elegant letters. Theodosius I, the Byzantine Emperor, closed all pagan temples across the empire in 391. This move put an end to a four-thousand-year-old tradition, and the ancient Egyptian language’s message was lost for 1500 years. The discovery of the Rosetta stone awakened the Ancient Egyptians from their lengthy slumber. This was thanks to the efforts of Jean-Francois Champollion (1790-1832). We now know more about Egyptian civilization than most other ancient cultures. This is because of the huge amount of writing available.
Ancient Egyptian Alphabet (Hieroglyphic)

Unlike other societies, they never abandoned or simplified the early image forms, possibly because they are so beautiful to look at.The Egyptians established writing approximately four thousand years before Christ and also had a decimal system of numeration up to a million. The Egyptians referred to hieroglyphs as “the language of God,” and priests primarily utilized them. These meticulously drawn symbols were wonderful for adorning temple walls, but they used another script, known as hieratic, for everyday business.
Writers shortened the image signals to the point of abstraction in this handwriting. You can read hieroglyphs from left to right or right to left, and writers wrote them in rows or columns. The one can tell which way to read the text because the human or animal images always face towards the beginning of the line. You also read the higher symbols first, followed by the lower symbols.
There are four types of hieroglyphic symbols:
-
Each letter of the alphabet represents a distinct sound. Unfortunately, the Egyptians took most vowels for granted, and they did not represent letters like ‘e’ and ‘v’. As a result, we may never know how the words came to be.
-
Syllabic marks represent two or three consonants.
-
Word-signs are images of items that people use as words to describe those objects. They’re followed by an upright stroke to show that a single sign has finished the word.
-
A determinative is a visual representation of an object that aids the reader. For example, if a term represented an abstract notion, an image of a roll of papyrus, tied and sealed, was provided to demonstrate that writers could express the meaning of the word in writing but not pictorially.
The Egyptian hieroglyphic alphabet had 24 uniliterals (symbols that stood for single consonants, much like letters in English). The Egyptians could have written all words with these signs, but they never did. They never reduced their complicated writing to a real alphabet.
