For centuries, the Serapeum remained lost to time. In 1850, French archaeologist Auguste Mariette discovered the entrance to the Serapeum. He was guided by ancient texts from the Greek geographer Strabo, who described a temple in Saqqara with sphinxes leading to the burial ground of the Apis bulls. Mariette’s team unearthed a long avenue of sphinxes, just as Strabo had written. They then located the entrance to the underground catacombs. Mariette and his team spent years excavating the site. They found 24 massive granite sarcophagi, each one weighing between 70 and 100 tons.

The Serapeum is a complex network of underground tunnels and chambers. The main section consists of a long gallery with side chambers carved into the limestone walls.
