The construction of the Al-Hakim Mosque began in 990 CE under the Fatimid vizier, Gawhar al-Siqilli. Initially, it was a smaller prayer space. However, when Caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah took power, he completely transformed the project. He expanded the mosque and added many of its defining features. The work continued until 1013 CE. Al-Hakim’s long and eccentric rule, during which he was known for radical decrees, is forever tied to this grand building.

Over the centuries, the mosque faced periods of both neglect and restoration. An earthquake in 1303 CE severely damaged it. The Mamluk Sultan Baybars al-Jashankir later rebuilt and restored it. Napoleon Bonaparte’s French forces used the mosque as a stable and a workshop in the late 18th century. Today, extensive restoration efforts have brought the mosque back to its former glory.
