Founded in the 7th century, this monastery was not a small, quiet chapel. It was a massive, self-sufficient, and heavily fortified compound, built to protect the monks from desert raiders. It flourished for centuries before it was finally abandoned in the 13th century.

1. The Massive Defensive Walls
