Souq Al-Khayamiya: Cairo’s Dazzling Tentmakers’ Market

Among all the unique bazaars, open-air marketplaces, and stores in Egypt, the most fascinating is the Souq Al-Khayamiya Tentmakers Bazaar.

Step away from the typical tourist paths and walk beneath a vibrant canopy of color. Welcome to Souq Al-Khayamiya, the “Street of the Tentmakers.” Tucked away in the heart of Islamic Cairo, this is one of the city’s last and most beautiful historic covered markets.

Located just south of the great medieval gate of Bab Zuweila, this souq is not just a place to shop; it’s a living museum. It is here that an ancient Egyptian art form, Khayamiya, is practiced by master artisans just as it has been for centuries.

What is “Khayamiya”?

What is Khayamiya

Khayamiya is the traditional Egyptian art of decorative appliqué. It involves intricately stitching brightly colored pieces of cotton fabric onto a heavy-duty canvas or linen base. The artisans create stunning, complex designs, from intricate Pharaonic motifs and geometric Islamic stars to flowing Arabic calligraphy.

Historically, this art was used to create the massive, opulent tents (khayma) that lined streets for weddings, festivals, and other grand ceremonies. Today, while the craft has evolved, its spirit remains unchanged.

Your Experience at the Tentmakers’ Market

Your Experience at the Tentmakers' Market

A walk through Souq Al-Khayamiya is an experience for all the senses. Unlike the busy, open-air Khan El-Khalili, this market is a covered arcade, creating a focused and intimate atmosphere.

Here’s what you’ll see and do:

1. Watch the Masters at Work

This is the market’s greatest highlight. The souq is lined with small, open workshops. You can (and should) stop and watch the artisans themselves—traditionally men—sitting cross-legged, meticulously hand-stitching their complex designs. They are friendly, proud of their work, and often happy to show you their process.

2. Shop for Authentic, Handmade Art

This is the best place in Egypt to buy authentic, high-quality textile art. Forget mass-produced souvenirs; everything here is handmade. You will find:

  • Stunning wall tapestries (both large and small)
  • Unique cushion covers
  • Colorful bedspreads
  • Table runners, bags, and purses
  • Vibrant decorations, especially for Ramadan

3. Capture Breathtaking Photos

The market is a photographer’s dream. The long, covered laneway, the hanging tapestries that form a “roof” of color, and the artisans at work create an incredibly atmospheric scene.

4. Explore the Historic Setting

The market sits at the foot of Bab Zuweila, one of the last remaining gates of medieval Cairo, built in the 11th century. We highly recommend climbing the gate’s two minarets! The rooftop offers a stunning, unrivaled view over the minarets and domes of Islamic Cairo, all the way to the Citadel.

Tips for Your Visit

Tips for Your Visit to Khayamiya Market (Tentmakers)

  • Be Respectful: These are artists’ workshops, not just souvenir stalls.
  • Ask Before Photographing: Always ask for permission before taking close-up photos of the artisans or their work. A simple smile and gesture are usually all it takes.
  • Bring Cash: While some larger shops may take cards, many of the smaller workshops prefer cash.
  • Enjoy the Calm: The pace here is slower and far less “hustle” than other markets. Take your time, browse, and chat with the shopkeepers.
