Sinai Peninsula Geography

14-day Egypt Adventure

The Sinai Peninsula sits between the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the south. It is the only part of Egypt in Asia and serves as the country’s sole eastern gateway. Spanning 61,000 square kilometers, it is divided into two governorates: Southern Sinai and Northern Sinai.

Al-Arish, the seat of the North Sinai governorate, is the largest city in Sinai. It is known for its picturesque shoreline and palm-lined beaches. You can find Ras Muhammad National Park at the southernmost point. The climate is sunny all year. However, due to the high altitude and mountainous terrain, the weather can be cold.

Sinai Peninsula History

Trip to Mount Sinai St. Catherine Monastery From Cairo Egypt Fun Tours min 1

For almost 5,000 years, people have considered Sinai the land of prophets and conquerors. Because of its key geopolitical location and cultural fusion, Sinai has always been very important. It served as a focal point for ancient civilizations like the Levant, Mesopotamia, and Asia Minor. This continued even during the Ptolemaic period.

Foreign powers have long controlled and colonized Sinai. This includes the Ottoman Empire from 1517 to 1867 AD and the United Kingdom from 1882 to 1956 BC. More recently, a conflict arose between Egypt and Israel. It ended in 1979 with a peace deal and the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from Egyptian territory. Today, Sinai is a popular tourist destination. It has a rich biblical history, magnificent resorts, and abundant coral reefs.
