One Day in Cairo: What to See

One Day in Cairo: What to See

Many travelers ask, “What can I see in one day in Cairo?” It’s a great question, but it’s important to remember that Cairo is a huge, bustling city. Traffic can be heavy, and the main attractions are spread out. This makes it challenging to see everything in just a single day.

For a full experience, you really need two days to cover the city’s key highlights. We typically divide the sights into two groups: the Pyramids sites on the west bank of the Nile and the cultural attractions on the east bank.

Day 1: Ancient Wonders

  • The Giza Pyramids: Explore nine pyramids from the 4th Dynasty. You’ll see the remains of the funeral temple of King Cheops, the powerful Sphinx, and the Valley Temple of King Chephren.
  • The Necropolis of Saqqara: Visit the ancient cemetery of Saqqara. This site holds the Step Pyramid of King Djoser and the museum of Imhotep, along with the tombs of Old Kingdom nobles.
  • Memphis: Discover the very first capital city of ancient Egypt.

Day 2: Cultural Gems

  • The Egyptian Museum: This is a must-see. The museum houses over 120,000 artifacts from ancient Egypt, including the famous treasures of King Tutankhamun.
  • Islamic & Coptic Cairo: Walk through different historical neighborhoods. You can explore a variety of mosques, churches, and other significant sites.
  • Khan El-Khalili Bazaar: Wander through this bustling bazaar. It’s the perfect place to shop for souvenirs, spices, and other goods.

While you could try to squeeze these attractions into one very long day, we highly recommend planning for two days to truly appreciate each site without feeling rushed. It’s the best way to ensure you have a memorable and enjoyable trip.

We arrived at the port gates with only 10 minutes to spare. But the guards ignored our U.S. passports, and they refused to
