Essential Egypt Travel FAQs

The best time for comfortable sightseeing is October to April. This is peak season, so expect higher prices and more crowds. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider the shoulder months of May or September.

Our 7-day tour costs range based on style: Budget/Solo packages start around $700 – $1,000 per person. Our most popular Mid-Range packages (including Nile Cruise and domestic flights) are generally $1,200 – $1,800 per person.

Joining one of our scheduled group departures is usually the most cost-effective option, as it significantly reduces the solo supplement. A private package offers more flexibility but will be more expensive.

Domestic flights are included in the price of all our Classic and Luxury packages. Only our absolute Budget tours offer the option to substitute the slower, more affordable overnight train.

Yes, this combination is very popular. You need a minimum of 9 to 10 days for a well-paced trip that covers the core history (Cairo/Nile) and allows 3-4 full days of relaxation or diving in the Red Sea.

A Traveler's Guide to Egyptian Food & Drink

A journey through Egypt is incomplete without savoring the ancient and modern flavors of its cuisine. Egyptian dishes are comforting, hearty, and highly vegetarian-friendly, rooted in the staples of rice, legumes, and bread.

Must-Try Egyptian Dishes & Local Staples

Egyptian cuisine is rich, hearty, and relies heavily on legumes, vegetables, and rice—perfect for fueling a long day of sightseeing. Don’t worry about complexity; the best food is often simple and comforting.

  • Koshari (The National Dish): A surprising and satisfying vegetarian feast. It is a hearty blend of rice, macaroni, and lentils, topped with chickpeas, crispy fried onions, and a tangy, spicy tomato-vinegar sauce. You can find Koshari in dedicated shops and street stalls across Cairo.
  • Ful & Taameya (Breakfast Staples): These are essential, inexpensive breakfast and light meal options. Ful is slow-cooked fava beans mixed with oil, lemon, and spices. Taameya is the Egyptian version of falafel, made uniquely from crushed fava beans (rather than chickpeas) and fried into flavorful green patties.
  • Mahshi: A delightful home-style dish involving vegetables (like zucchini, bell peppers, or cabbage leaves) stuffed with a seasoned rice and herb mixture. It is slow-cooked until tender and is a great way to enjoy a traditional Egyptian dinner.
  • Shawarma & Kofta: For meat lovers, look for Shawarma (thinly sliced marinated meat, typically beef or chicken, cooked on a vertical spit) and Kofta (spiced ground meat grilled over charcoal and served on a skewer or in pita). These are reliable, flavorful options found everywhere.

Beverages, Sweets, and Dining Etiquette

Egyptian hospitality centers around sharing meals and offering drinks. Don’t be afraid to try what the locals are having—just remember to stick to bottled water!

  • Tea (Shai): Served strong, sweet, and typically black, tea is the universal sign of welcome in Egypt. Accepting a cup offered by a merchant or a guide is a gesture of appreciation and politeness.
  • Karkade (Hibiscus Tea): A vibrant, deep-red drink served either hot or refreshingly cold. This tart, slightly sweet tea is a potent thirst-quencher and an excellent source of vitamin C, making it perfect for the desert climate.
  • Sweets: Indulge in local desserts like Basbousa (a sweet semolina cake soaked in heavy syrup) and Om Ali (Egypt’s delicious version of bread pudding, made with pastry, milk, nuts, and raisins).
  • Dining Etiquette: Tipping (or baksheesh) is an essential part of the service culture. A 5-10% tip is standard for your server, even if a small service charge is included in the bill. Tipping small amounts for minor services (like baggage handling) is common practice.

What You Will See & Experience on Your Tour

Cairo & The Icons: Pyramids, Pharoahs, and Modern Life

Your journey launches in the electric energy of Cairo. This is where you encounter the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, standing face-to-face with the last standing ancient wonder. You’ll spend time with the Pharoahs’ gold at the stunning Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the world’s largest archaeological museum. Dive into the city’s heart, navigating the bustling alleys of the medieval Khan el-Khalili Bazaar and witnessing panoramic views from the mighty Citadel of Saladin. Cairo is a non-stop masterclass in history.

The Nile Cruise: Temples, Tombs, and Timeless Vistas

The centerpiece of any classic package is the cruise—a floating hotel on the world’s longest river. In Luxor (Ancient Thebes), you explore the epic scale of Karnak Temple and wander the silent, sun-baked pathways of the Valley of the Kings, home to the royal tombs. The ship glides south, stopping at key landmarks like the dual-dedicated Kom Ombo Temple and the fortress-like Temple of Horus at Edfu. The experience culminates in Aswan, the vibrant Nubian gateway, with an unmissable optional day trip to the colossal statues of Abu Simbel.

Adventure & Relaxation: Red Sea Beaches and Desert Wonders

Want more than temples? Our tours pivot seamlessly to adventure. The Red Sea coastline—specifically Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh—offers some of the planet’s best diving and snorkeling, featuring crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral gardens. For true exploration, we take you off-grid into the Western Desert. Experience the vast silence of the White Desert National Park with an overnight camping trip, witnessing surreal chalk formations and gazing at unmatched night skies.

Essential Travel Logistics & Cultural Tips

Money, Tipping, and Local Customs

Tipping (): Tipping is essential and customary in Egypt. Carry small denominations (EGP or USD) for guides, drivers, hotel staff, and luggage handlers. Currency: The Egyptian Pound (EGP) is the official currency, but USD and Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas. ATMs are common in major cities.

Safety and Traveler Security

Egypt is a safe destination for tourists. All major tourist areas and routes are monitored, and private tours (like ours) include dedicated drivers and guides focused entirely on your security and comfort. Use common sense, stay aware of your surroundings in crowded markets, and trust your guide’s advice.

Clothing and Etiquette

Clothing: Dress is generally conservative. While shorts and t-shirts are fine at Red Sea resorts and on Nile cruise boats, women should pack trousers or long skirts and cover shoulders when visiting temples, mosques, or less-touristed areas. Comfortable, closed walking shoes are a must.

Planning Essentials: Timing, Budget, and Booking

The Best Time to Visit Egypt (Seasonal Breakdown)

While Egypt is a year-round destination, timing your visit is key to comfort. The peak season is October through April, offering moderate temperatures (average to in Cairo) that are ideal for exploring temples and tombs. The shoulder seasons (May/September) offer great value, lower crowds, and sunny Red Sea weather, though the southern sites can be hot. Summer (June-August) is the low season due to intense heat, but prices are significantly lower, and the Red Sea is still excellent. We always advise clients based on their specific itinerary needs and heat tolerance.

For the optimal experience, we highly recommend the period from late October to early March. During this window, you can fully enjoy walking tours of the vast Karnak Temple complex and the Valley of the Kings without the intensity of the sun. Cruising the Nile is also a truly tranquil experience in these cooler months. If you are specifically interested in diving or budget savings, travel between May and September will offer better availability and the warmest water temperatures on the Red Sea coast, but prepare for early morning starts at major archaeological sites.

Understanding Your Egypt Travel Budget

The cost of your Egypt package depends heavily on your style of travel (Luxury vs. Budget) and the inclusion of flights. Budget-friendly tours start around per day, covering essential transport, accommodation, and guided access. Luxury tours can range from to per day, including 5-star superior hotels, gourmet dining, and private Dahabiya cruises. Remember to budget an additional per person for tips, shopping, and any optional excursions not included in your chosen package.

Why Book Your Egypt Tour Now (The GEM Factor)

With the highly anticipated opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) and renewed interest in the country, Egypt is becoming one of the world’s most desired destinations. Booking your tour at least 6-9 months in advance is now highly recommended, especially for peak season travel. This secures the best Nile cruise cabins, premium hotel rooms overlooking the Pyramids, and confirms your preferred Egyptologist guide, ensuring you don’t miss out on the travel rush.
